Corruption obstructs improving health sector: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the biggest issue in improving the healthcare services in Maldives is corruption being incorporated into the sector.

Addressing the ceremony held to mark the Golden Jubilee of the inauguration of health services in Baa Atoll, President Solih said several new services will commence at the Baa Atoll Hospital, adding the construction of a new hospital building will begin this year.

Noting health services need to be improved in every atoll, the president highlighted the challenges faced to the sector, mentioning lack of space, lack of laboratory facilities and equipment, doctors and nurses. In his speech, the president further noted one main issue faced in improving the healthcare services is corruption being incorporated to the sector in arranging services to the citizens.

In this regard, the president highlighted the core value of the national health scheme has also been lost, adding the burden on the budget is due to acts of corruption.
