Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in the Maldives on an official visit. He was welcomed at Velana International Airport by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to the Maldives is scheduled for 14–15 September. The visit is being made at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The invitation was extended during President Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia in April 2025. This is Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s first visit to the Maldives since assuming office as Malaysia’s Prime Minister in November 2022.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu welcomed the Malaysian Prime Minister at the airport. Schoolchildren also presented a cultural performance as part of the welcome ceremony. The Prime Minister will be officially welcomed at a ceremony tomorrow morning.
During the visit, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will hold official talks with President Muizzu. The discussions will focus on bilateral relations, strengthening cooperation in the international arena, and opening new avenues to expand ties across various sectors. The two leaders will also witness the signing of memoranda of understanding in several key areas aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations.
During the visit, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam will each pay separate courtesy calls on the Malaysian Prime Minister.
The Maldives and Malaysia have maintained diplomatic relations for 58 years. The two countries have developed strong ties, including close relations between their peoples, high-level exchanges and continued cooperation across various areas of development.
