Gov’t plans harbour, recycling facility for Addu Waste System

Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim has revealed that a harbour and recycling facility will be developed as part of the Southern Regional Waste Management System in Addu City, with preparations underway to begin implementation.

The system will cater to Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City, and Addu City to dispose of their waste in a safe manner.

As part of the project’s first phase, a waste incineration system was installed to convert waste into electricity. According to the minister, the upcoming second phase will expand into a comprehensive regional waste management system, with preparations now in place to commence work.

The minister said the new development will include a waste separation system, a storage facility for incineration residue, an administrative office, and a dedicated harbour for waste transport. A recycling plant for reusable materials will also be established.

The minister added that administrative work is ongoing to launch the project, and that funding has already been secured.
