Task of judges is connected to rights of many people: Justice Shujune

Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujune Mohamed has said the task of judges is connected to the rights of many people; however, it is a lonely and overwhelming task.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the judges appointed to the Civil Court of the Maldives, Justice Shujune said a judge does not work for their own benefit and something they may or may not do might displease the people and may question the judiciary system. She said the role of a lawyer and a judge is very different, adding judges should make decisions on what is submitted and what is seen at the court, and should not be judged according to what is seen outside of the court.

Furthermore, Justice Shujune reiterated every judge should be an honest person who upholds the dignity and respect of the judiciary system and that they are entrusted with the power to maintain the trust and confidence of the judiciary. She also urged every judge to work towards the development of the judiciary.

The two new judges appointed to the Civil Court are Zulaikha Sheeza and Ahmed Nimal Junaid. The oath was administered by Chief Judge of High Court Hathif Hilmy in the presence of the President of Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Hisaan Hussain.
