Committee to investigate medical issues during MNDF training

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has established a committee to investigate an incident in which military personnel faced medical issues during a military training exercise in Maafilaafushi, Lhaviyani Atoll.

MNDF has revealed three military personnel had faced medical issues during training, with one of the trainees, 22-year-old Private Mohamed Raafil, succumbing to his injuries while receiving emergency treatment at Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital. The second individual has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), while the third is receiving treatment at the ward.

MNDF stated military training exercises has inherent risks involved, and that trainees participate in such exercises after undergoing physical and medical tests. MNDF stated a committee has been established with experts from various fields and that it has begun an investigation. It stated details of the incident will be disclosed after the committee completes the investigation.

A similar incident had occurred previously, in which officers had to undergo medical treatment in Male’ City after facing medical issues during a military training exercise.
