Maldives calls for greater empowerment of women to build resilient societies

Maldives has called for greater empowerment of women in order to build peaceful, resilient societies. The statement was made by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, while speaking at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)’s Open Debate on Advancing Women, Peace and Security (WPC).

Speaking at the open debate, State Minister Khaleel highlighted that conflicts have far-reaching consequences for all of society, particularly women. The state minister acknowledged the progress achieved by the UNSC in advancing the WPC agenda, and called for more efforts to empower women in building peaceful and resilient societies.

Speaking further, State Minister Khaleel highlighted the efforts undertaken by the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to promote gender equality. He reiterated the commitment of the Maldives in promoting women’s empowerment and having women in decision-making and executive positions.

The ministerial-level open debate was one of the signature events of the UNSC chaired by the UAE. The debate was chaired by the Minister of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE, Mariam Al Mheiri.
