Land plots to be provided to Male' residents for free

The President's Office has stated the government plans to provide land plots in the Greater Male' Region for free.

Mayor of Male' City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recently implied the government plans to sell land in the Greater Male' Region. In a letter to the President's Office, Mayor Muizzu said he has heard reports that the government plans to provide 1,000 land plots in Hulhumale' for residents of Male' and requested that the land plots be given out for free.

Responding to the letter, the President's Office highlighted that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in the presidential address, announced the provision of at least 1,000 land plots from Hulhumale', 2,000 land plots from Gulhifalhu, and 2,000 land plots from Giraavarufalhu.

The President's Office stated President Solih had assured the residents of Male' City that he would address their housing needs before the end of his term, but that he did not indicate that the land plots would be sold. It also stated that the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has been informed of the concerns put forth by the Male' City Council.

President Solih revealed his decision to provide over 5,000 land plots in the Greater Male' Region to the residents of the capital city, in the Presidential Address delivered at the Parliament of the Maldives in February.

In his address, President Solih described housing as the most prominent issue for the residents of Male' and vowed to solve the issue before the end of his term. He also announced the development of 5,000 housing units in Hulhumale' and revealed plans to develop an additional 2,000 housing units in Hulhumale'.
