Gov't to introduce digital ID cards within two years

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has announced the government will introduce digital identity cards within two years. She made the announcement at the inauguration ceremony of the gov.mv message service.

In her speech, Minister Shauna detailed the plan of the government for technological development in the next two years. She said technology is now embedded in everyday life and that the aim of the government is to use technology to make long-lasting improvements in the country.

Minister Shauna said the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) will be introducing government digital services within the next two years to improve government services and make way for a digital economy. The minister said the government has begun seeking experts for the NCIT project management unit to improve its current technology infrastructure and establish a private government cloud this year as a leading digital transformation service. She also said the introduction of digital identity cards is part of the strategic action plan of the government, which includes improving the e-faas authentication service currently in use for government digital services.

Minister Shauna said the improvements to the country's digital infrastructure will allow citizens to receive better health and social services.
