Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan has stated the free degree scheme introduced in 2019 signifies the priority and importance given by the current administration to higher education and training.
Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the success of the free degree scheme, the Higher Education Minister stated the opportunity to study for a bachelor’s degree free of charge was opened as part of efforts to build an educated and capable generation for the future. The minister said the opening of the free degree scheme was an important step in building the capacity of multiple sectors essential for national development. He attributed the success of the scheme to the collaborative efforts of the higher education ministry, the President’s Office, universities and colleges.
The higher education minister further noted the free degree scheme continued without interruption despite the financial and economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted this signifies the high level of priority and importance allocated by the administration towards higher education and training.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chancellor of Maldives National University (MNU) Dr. Hassan Hameed said the free degree scheme opened up opportunities for over 10,000 students, and released a massive burden from parents. He said the scheme was a vital investment for the future of the nation.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of Islamic University of the Maldives (IUM) Dr. Ibrahim Zakariyya Moosa also highlighted the importance of the scheme and thanked the President for this important initiative. He added the continuation of this programme amid the COVID-19 pandemic also shows the determination and resolve of the administration to fulfill its pledges to the public.
Over 10,000 students were enrolled under the free degree scheme, including over 7,100 students currently studying under the scheme. The government has spent over USD 15 million on the free degree scheme.
