President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to New Zealand’s Governor-General and Prime Minister on the occasion of Waitangi Day, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.
In messages sent to Cindy Kiro, Governor-General of New Zealand, and Christopher Luxon, President Mohamed Muizzu reflected on the values underpinning the Treaty of Waitangi, describing partnership, respect and unity as principles that continue to shape New Zealand’s national identity.
In his letter to the Governor-General, the President said the Maldives highly values its close and friendly relations with New Zealand, noting the shared commitment of both countries to cooperation and mutual understanding. He also expressed interest in expanding collaboration in areas of common interest, both bilaterally and through multilateral platforms.
Writing to the Prime Minister, President Muizzu highlighted more than five decades of friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and New Zealand. He conveyed appreciation for New Zealand’s continued support and partnership, and said he was confident that relations would continue to deepen in a mutually beneficial manner.
The President also extended his personal best wishes to both leaders for good health and wellbeing, and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the people of New Zealand.
In a message posted on his official X account, President Muizzu reiterated these sentiments, saying Waitangi Day highlights the importance of embracing diversity as a foundation for national unity and progress.
Waitangi Day is observed annually on 6 February to mark the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, regarded as New Zealand’s founding document.
