Maldivian economic revival dependent on COVID-19 containment: Economic Minister

Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has stated the revival of the Maldivian economy is dependent on how well the country contains the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a virtual ceremony held to inaugurate additional COVID-19 treatment facilities, Economic Minister Fayyaz said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was faced with critical yet difficult decisions as the country had to close its border, issue a lockdown and stop economic and social activities. The minister said the decision of the president to listen to health professionals has paid off and the economy is now slowly recovering. He said the Maldives is managing the pandemic situation considerably well despite the limited resources available in the country.

Minister Fayyaz highlighted President Solih came to power to better lives of the people and the administration has been able to attend various concerns of the people despite the challenges faced due to COVID-19. The minister said the administration has established better health facilities and infrastructure amidst the pandemic, which will benefit the people when the country returns to normal conditions. He applauded the efforts of the frontline workers and urged all individuals to continue the fight against COVID-19 to revive the Maldivian economy.
