Maldives working to obtain initial batch of COVID-19 vaccine

Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has stated efforts are underway to ensure the Maldives is amongst the first countries to receive the vaccine developed for COVID-19.

Speaking at a virtual ceremony held to inaugurate additional COVID-19 management facilities, Health Minister Ameen said the administration is taking all necessary measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 and take proactive safety measures. In this regard, he said the administration aims to be amongst the first countries to receive the vaccine for COVID-19.

Furthermore, Minister Ameen said the Maldives was amongst the first countries to join the Call for Action campaign lead by World Health Organisation (WHO), as the administration understands the importance of a vaccine for countries with limited resources. He said the Maldives is working to obtain the vaccine, adding the WHO has been an important partner in the fight against COVID-19 in the Maldives.

The health minister further said the pandemic has also underlined the importance of decentralising the health system in the Maldives. He also expressed hope to develop telemedicine services in the country and acquire the trust of the public.
