Maldivian security forces prevented largest terror attack of 2017

Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed has revealed the security forces of the Maldives prevented the biggest terror attack of the year 2017.
Addressing first ever councilors conference held in Maldives, CP said the plan of detonating an aerial bomb was led by a Maldivian based in Syria with the support of Islamic State (IS).

Speaking on the prevalence of terrorist activities in Maldives and the efforts of Maldives Polices Services to mitigate terrorist activities, CP Hameed said Maldives has been one of the strongest players amongst the South Asian countries in the fight against terrorism. Highlighting the achievements of Maldives against terrorism, CP said the prevention of an aerial bomb planned by a Maldivian in Syria with instructions from the leadership of IS. The IED device planned to be used was made by locals in Male’ following instructions from the terrorist organization, revealed CP.

Furthermore, he said the prevention of this attack was the biggest counter-terrorism, intelligence and investigation operation carried in the world in 2017 with participation from 5 other countries. The attack was prevented by a partnership of Maldives Polices Services, Maldives National Defence Force, National Counter Terrorism Centre, he added.

The information Maldives Police Services shared at the conference indicated several parties in Maldives promote activities of IS and terrorist activities.
