Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, and Sri Lankan Airlines, the flag carrier of Sri Lanka and a member of the Oneworld alliance, have announced a new strategic partnership, marking a significant move set to reshape regional air travel.
The agreement is designed to dramatically enhance connectivity between the Maldives and a wide global network, simultaneously improving passenger access across both carriers’ extensive route maps.
Central to the partnership is a plan to funnel more international travellers into the Maldivian archipelago. Maldivian will now welcome an increased number of passengers arriving from Sri Lankan Airlines' vast international network onto its domestic flights, connecting them from the capital, Male’, to 17 domestic destinations.
This initiative will provide seamless travel for visitors from key global markets, who can now efficiently reach the Maldives’ coveted atolls via a smooth transit through Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Conversely, the collaboration will also grant Maldivian citizens smoother and more flexible options for international travel, offering them easy connections through Colombo to a broad spectrum of worldwide destinations served by Sri Lankan Airlines and its Oneworld partners.
Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian, highlighted the partnership's significance, describing it as another important step in its efforts to enhance accessibility to the Maldives and strengthen connectivity beyond Male’ to the atolls.
“With Sri Lankan Airlines’ extensive global reach and our domestic network, this collaboration will support tourism growth while also making international travel more convenient for Maldivians,” he said.
The alliance underscores a shared commitment from both airlines to strengthen regional cooperation, enhance network integration, and deliver a superior, seamless travel experience.
