Male’ City Council has decided to collaborate with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to provide municipal services in Hulhumale'. The agreement is followed by the ratification of the amendments to the Decentralisation Act, which grants the responsibility of all jurisdiction in an area to councils.
Speaking to PSM News, Parliamentarian Ali Niyaz said the city council has been empowered greatly with the new changes, noting the authority of all jurisdictions and responsibility of all municipal services have been entrusted to councils. He said no services in Hulhumale' will be disrupted as the two authorities have reached a management agreement.
Niyaz further said the drafts have been exchanged between the two offices and will be signed soon. He assured no services will be disrupted nor will any staff be dismissed from the HDC.
HDC has always provided municipal services in Hulhumale', while it also holds ownership of land and flats since the development of the island.
