President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will not be hindered in fulfilling its promises to the public, even if cooperation is not received from a particular council.
He made these remarks while speaking at a gathering held in Rasdhoo, Alif Alif Atoll to celebrate the success of candidates from the People’s National Congress (PNC) who contested in the recently concluded local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections in Rasdhoo, Thoddoo, and Ukulhas of Alif Alif Atoll.
The President noted that regardless of which party is elected to positions, priority must always be given to Islam and the national interest. Referring to the election results, he said it is evident that the majority of Maldivians prioritise religion and national values, and that many citizens support the PNC’s ideology centred on these principles. The President expressed his gratitude to the public for this support. He also added that even in areas where large victories were not secured, the government will continue to work sincerely in the best interests of the people.
The President further highlighted that even before officially assuming office, some elected candidates have taken to the streets using harsh language, engaging in actions that go beyond acceptable moral and religious standards, and causing public disturbances. He emphasised that citizens vote with the expectation that elected representatives will act responsibly, carry out their duties faithfully, and set a positive example.
“From what we are seeing now, it does not appear that Male’ City Council will provide that cooperation. Even within less than a week, the situation unfolding on the streets is evident,” President Dr Muizzu said.
He added that if councils fail to cooperate with the government without valid reason in the future, those matters will be clearly explained to the public in detail.
