More areas to be declared as biosphere reserves in Maldives

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has revealed efforts are underway to declare additional areas in Maldives as biosphere reserves of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The environment minister said the details of the areas which can be allocated as UNESCO biosphere reserves will be submitted this year.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declared in every atoll a minimum of one island, one atoll and one wetland will henceforth be regarded as a protected area. In this regard, 14 areas of the north have been declared as eco-rich areas. The areas include, islands, reefs, mangroves and wetlands. When declaring as eco-rich areas, importance is given for areas which are delicate and shows natural beauty.

Speaking to media regarding allocation of eco-rich areas, Minister Hussain Rasheed said some areas have now been identified and submitted to the cabinet. He expressed efforts are underway to submit to UNESCO in September to allocate areas in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City as a biosphere reserve.

Moreover, the minister said following requests to protect reefs in 13 resorts, it has also been submitted to the cabinet. He revealed since many areas are being declared eco-rich areas, plans are underway to arrange accommodations in nearby areas to enable tourists and sight seekers.

As of now, Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve is the only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Maldives.
