Maldives lag behind 100 years in providing basic necessities: President

Criticising that it is a neglect of the previous administrations, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said Maldives lag behind 100 years in providing basic necessities compared to poorest countries of the world.

Speaking at campaign event held by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Solih noted several projects need to be initiated to develop Maldives, adding building does not portray development. He noted people might take water, sewerage and sanitation projects very lightly, highlighting it is questionable why such projects are not conducted in all parts of the country.

Moreover, President Solih revealed the state always receive income and people pay their taxes, but basic necessities are not provided to the citizens. The president said it is the utmost responsibility of the head of state to ensure citizens are given their basic human rights.

Widely criticizing the previous administrations, President Solih underscored the development plan of Maldives is lagging behind by 100 years, while other countries have ensured basic necessities in 19th century. He expressed hope to ensure all basic necessities are fulfilled in the coming days.
