60% of land needed to construct Faresmathoda Airport reclaimed

Faresmaathoda Island Council has revealed 60% of land needed to construct the airport in the island has been reclaimed.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Faresmaathoda Island Council Nasrulla Mohamed said 19.8 hectares is to be reclaimed to develop the airport. In this regard, he revealed 60% of the land reclamation project has been completed, adding with regard to the size and speed of the project, still more time will be consumed to complete the project.

It is an aim of the administration to develop an airport in Faresmaathoda in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll before the end of the year. Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam expressed the project is the most awaited project of the citizens of the island as well as the entire atoll. As part of the airport development project in Faresmaathoda, an area of 18 hectares of land will be reclaimed.

The airport developed in Faresmaathoda will have a 1,200 kilometre runway, an apron and a passenger terminal. The land reclamation of the airport in Faresmaathoda is expected to cost USD 2.5 million.

The airport will be the fourth airport to be developed in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
