JP to field candidates for 36 constituencies

Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided to field candidates for 36 constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Although a party council meeting took place to select candidates, it was decided to give the authority to finalise the candidate list to Qasim Ibrahim, the leader of the party.

JP, which is one of the parties which forms the government, opened opportunity for interested individuals to apply for the party ticket to compete in the elections. A total of 97 individuals showed interest to attain a ticket during the window, according to the party. The individuals include sitting parliamentarians and key figures from the previous administration. In this regard all sitting parliamentarians representing JO were given tickets to contest in the elections.

Furthermore, the 12-member bloc who were reinstated to the Parliament by the Supreme Court would also be given tickets, according to JP.

Meanwhile, the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will be fielding candidates for 86 constituencies. It is believed Adhalaath Party, another coalition partner, will compete for 13 constituencies, while Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) has revealed it will confirm constituencies it will field candidates after discussions with the coalition partners.
