Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali has said female police officers are working on the front lines in sensitive cases, dangerous situations and professional fields, and that it has a positive effect on the police institution and the country as a whole.
Speaking at the ceremony held to mark this year’s Women in Policing Day, Minister Geela described women police officers as one of the pillars of the police service. Referring to statistics, the minister said their numbers have increased significantly since the police service was established as a civilian institution, from a small number to more than 1,300 today. This increase reflects the need for women police officers in society, she said.
The minister said training and policies within the police service have helped increase women’s interest in joining the institution, and highlighted the importance of gender equality within the institution. She further said women play an increasingly important role in law enforcement as society changes. She acknowledged the challenges they face in balancing police work with family responsibilities in various roles.
Praising women officers’ courage, she encouraged them to make use of training and international opportunities available to them. She also urged police officers to provide services with compassion and patience.
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed called on women police officers to take initiative in investigative and operational work. He said women can bring different perspectives to investigations and problem-solving.
The commissioner noted that women police officers have equal opportunities at police stations, adding that more women are participating in recruitment and training opportunities in the Maldives and abroad.
The commissioner stressed that the role of women in police leadership should be strengthened. He urged female officers to express their interest and take the lead in applying for opportunities available within the police service. He also encouraged women officers to remain mentally and physically prepared to face different situations in the line of duty.
