Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has urged women in the Maldives Police Service to develop leadership qualities and take on leadership roles.
More than 1,300 women currently work in the Maldives Police Service, making up more than 20 percent of the institution.
Speaking at the ceremony held to mark this year’s Women in Policing Day, Minister Ihusaan said holding a formal position is not necessary to be a leader, and that qualities such as confidence, initiative and courage are important. He emphasised that leaders must take initiative in resolving workplace issues, share their perspectives and work collaboratively. He described a true leader as one who sets an example and produces results, and urged women in the police service to embody such characteristics.
Women in Policing Day is celebrated annually on 17 September. This year’s ceremony was also attended by Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali as well as Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed.
