Maldives denies media reports of Indian army deployment

The Government of Maldives has categorically refuted media reports alleging that it is planning to allow the establishment of an Indian military base in Maldives, in exchange for financial assistance or other material benefits.

A statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the allegations are baseless, and aimed at discrediting the efforts of the government as it starts to rebuild good relations with its neighbours and the rest of the international community. The government assured the Maldivian people that it will always act in the national interest of the country and will not undertake any international engagement that will compromise the sovereignty and independence of the country.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has also assured opportunity will not be given to any foreign country to establish a military base in Maldives. Responding to media reports, the foreign minister said Maldives will not jeopardise its independence and sovereignty to attain foreign aid.

Furthermore, Minister Shahid assured no agreement to establish a foreign military base has been signed or will be agreed in the future, reiterating the opportunity will not be given by the government to conduct any such operations in Maldives.
