Foreign Minister hails Commonwealth as a platform to amplify voices of smaller nations

Foreign Minister, Dr Abdullah Khaleel has praised the Commonwealth as an important platform to amplify voices of small island developing nations (SIDS) as member states mark the organisation’s 77th anniversary on Commonwealth Day.

In a statement issued to commemorate the occasion, the foreign minister highlighted the role of the Commonwealth in bringing together diverse nations to address global challenges and promote shared prosperity.

“For more than seven decades the Commonwealth has stood as a beacon of hope in an evolving global landscape,” the statement said, noting that unity and diversity among member states have been central to tackling common challenges and expanding opportunities for sustainable development.

The minister said the Commonwealth continues to play a significant role for small island nations such as the Maldives, offering a forum where their concerns can be heard and acted upon.
For the Maldives, the organisation has been a key partner in strengthening economic resilience, particularly through initiatives related to climate finance and climate action.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face disproportionate impacts from climate change, making international cooperation vital, the statement noted.

“In an era of geopolitical uncertainties, the value of cooperation cannot be overstated, especially for small states,” the minister said.

As Commonwealth countries mark the milestone anniversary, the statement emphasised the importance of not only reflecting on past achievements but also ensuring the organisation remains responsive to emerging global issues.

This year’s Commonwealth Day is being observed under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth.” According to the minister, the theme reflects the collective values and ambitions shared among the organisation’s members.
