Parliamentarian Abdulla Mohamed has resubmitted the no-confidence motion against Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham.
A no confidence motion on Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham was submitted to the parliament recently. However, it was withdrawn. The motion was resubmitted by Abdulla Mohamed, who made the initial submission.
In the motion, Abdulla Mohamed mentioned 8 reasons for the submission, questioning her authenticity and capabilities to perform the duties of the prosecutor general as stated in the constitution. Ahmed Abdulla filed the no-confidence motion against Bisham accusing the chief prosecutor of failing to perform her duties without undue influence. He highlighted her failure to exercise powers as an independent state official when several lawmakers were detained and banned from entering the parliament.
The prosecutor general can be removed from the post on the ground of misconduct, incapacity or incompetence or finding to that effect by a committee of the parliament pursuant misconduct, incapacity or incompetence and upon the approval of such finding by the parliament by a majority of those present and voting, calling for the prosecutor general's removal from office, according to Article 228 of the constitution.
In the previous administration, Bisham had filled government posts, serving as the legal advisor and later as the attorney general.
