The Maldives has welcomed an announcement by the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden backing a two-state solution.
In a statement, the Maldivian government said it particularly welcomed the countries' opposition to actions that could amount to the annexation of Palestinian territory and the forcible displacement of Palestinians.
It said the announcement reflected renewed international momentum towards peace and stability in the region, as well as growing international support for ensuring peace, security and dignity for the Palestinian people.
The Maldives also reiterated its opposition to the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The government said it remained committed to supporting what it described as the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination.
It reaffirmed its support for the establishment of an independent, sovereign and viable State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement comes amid continued international efforts to advance a two-state solution, under which an independent Palestinian state would exist alongside Israel.
