Maafaru Airport will pave way for modern services in Noonu Atoll

The Maldivian Government commenced the project to develop a new international airport at Maafaru Island of Noonu atoll with the grant aid from UAE. The Maldivian Government and Abu Dhabi Fund signed the memorandum of understanding to develop the airport on December 25. The USD60 million project to develop the airport should be completed within six months, according to the government. The project has been going at a fast pace, with land for the airport fully prepared and equipment and machinery for the project transported to the island.

Speaking with PSM News regarding the project, Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer has revealed that an international airport in Maafaru Island will pave way for numerous modern services in Noonu Atoll. The 2.2 kilometre runway can accommodate private jets and revealed that the modern VVIP complex developed as part of the project will consist of numerous contemporary facilities, added the tourism minister.

Furthermore, a 50-room city hotel will also be built alongside the airport. Additional projects to enhance the operation of an international airport in Maafaru Island include the construction of a new harbour. The Maldivian Government aims to start the operations of the new international airport in Maafaru Island on 26 July 2018.
