HDC signs contract to build new school in Hulhumale’

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has signed an agreement with Amin Construction Pvt. Ltd. for the construction of a primary & secondary school in Neighborhood I of Hulhumale'.

The school, located next to Little Gems Pre-School and upcoming Community Centre, will accommodate approximately 1680 students of primary and secondary with 50 classrooms in three blocks of 7-storey buildings, and two of these classrooms will be dedicated to the education of students with special needs, HDC said.

The school will include all standard facilities such as laboratories, library, multi-purpose halls, prayer rooms, resource rooms, rooms for various extracurricular activities and sports, spaces for kitchen and canteen, and two lifts, according the company. The main hall is 650-square-meter, large enough to accommodate 864 students at a time.

“Some features new to Maldivian schools incorporated in the school's design includes open spaces in every floor for activities and open corridors in between the blocks enabling school supervisors and teachers easy monitoring of the school,” HDC said, adding that universal access ramps designed will enable wheelchair access from ground floors until the top floor.

The agreement relating to the project was signed by Ahmed Siman, Managing Director of HDC, and Abdulla Mohamed, Managing Director of Amin Construction.

Speaking after signing the agreement, Siman noted the importance of expanding infrastructure including schools and other facilities to accommodate and cater for the growing population of Hulhumale', which is expected to reach 12,000 this year.

There are currently three schools in Hulhumale' catering to primary and secondary school. The planned school, which is expected to be completed in 14 months, will become the 4th and the largest primary and secondary school in Hulhumale'.
