Maldives Expo 2026 to connect local producers with tourism market

Maldives Expo 2026 will help local producers find markets for their products through tourism, Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said.

Speaking on a special PSM programme on the preparations for the exhibition, the minister said this year’s exhibition will feature a ‘Visitor Economy District’ showcasing the unique identities and products of island communities. He noted that 22 islands will showcase their unique products in the district.

The minister noted that a cabinet-level Visitor Economy Council has been established to use tourism and related economic activities to promote island development. He said the government aims to benefit from the more than two million tourists visiting the Maldives.

Noting that the Maldivian economy depends on tourism, the minister said the government is expanding spaces to display local products. In this regard, Authentic Maldives’ space at Velana International Airport’s new terminal has been increased in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge, to 100 square metres. He said the space is positioned in the most prime location after passport control.

According to the minister, China, India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been allocated space at the exhibition, alongside the Creative Economy District. He said the participation of foreign exhibitors is expected to create opportunities for local producers.
