Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Mohamed Saeed has announced significant progress in the government’s nationwide energy initiative, confirming that Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) fuel sheds have now been successfully established in eight islands across eight atolls.
Fulfilling a key electoral pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the ambitious project aims to ensure that fishermen, industrial workers, and the general public in every atoll can access fuel at standard State Trading Organization (STO) rates. Traditionally, residents in many atolls have relied on private suppliers, forcing them to pay inflated prices and undertake long, costly journeys to source fuel.
"This is a major achievement that will directly lower energy expenditures, shorten travel times, and reduce the hardships long faced by our citizens, particularly our fishermen," Minister Saeed said.
The current rollout covers eight islands, Ihavandhoo (Haa Alifu Atoll), Hanimaadhoo (Haa Dhaalu Atoll), Milandhoo (Shaviyani Atoll), Dhuvaafaru (Raa Atoll), Eydhafushi (Baa Atoll), Meedhoo (Dhaalu Atoll), Kudahuvadhoo (Dhaalu Atoll), and Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll).
Launched officially in November 2024, the broader project targets the installation of fuel skids across 18 islands. The Ministry has confirmed that work is rapidly accelerating to meet the government's ultimate goal—establishing these vital services across every atoll and city in the Maldives before November 2027.
