President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed gratitude for Malaysia's continued support to the Maldives, highlighting the people of both countries as a key part of their strong relationship as the two nations mark 58 years of ties.
President Dr Muizzu made the remarks during a State Luncheon in honour of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his State Visit to the Maldives.
President Dr Muizzu said that although the Maldives and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1968, the relationship between their peoples runs much deeper than the dates recorded in official documents. He described it as a special relationship sustained across generations and said the people of both countries remain among the most important stakeholders in their strong ties.
The President also highlighted Malaysia's economic and social achievements over the years. He said Malaysia's development demonstrated how a country could achieve modern progress while preserving its own identity, and how investing in people could help expand its economy.
"Like Malaysia, the Maldives is also working to advance education, skills, digitalisation and technology, while strengthening economic resilience. There is scope to further enhance cooperation between our two countries in these areas," President Dr Muizzu said.
The President also highlighted Malaysia's continued assistance to the Maldives across various sectors. He thanked Prime Minister Anwar for Malaysia's financial and educational support and for prioritising visa facilitation for families with children who require special assistance.
President Dr Muizzu welcomed Malaysia's support for a proposal submitted by the Maldives for Petronas to conduct a study. He also expressed the Maldives' desire to work closely with Malaysia at the international level to address climate change and protect the oceans.
The President further thanked Prime Minister Anwar and the Malaysian Government for deciding to consider providing a currency swap facility to the Maldives and for agreeing to begin discussions on a Preferential Trade Agreement.
