PTA with Turkiye to boost trade, SME growth

The Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between the Maldives and Turkiye, which officially came into force on 1 August 2026, is expected to strengthen trade and economic ties between the the two countries, according to the Business Centre Corporation (BCC)’s Managing Director Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed.

In a social media post, Ziyau said the agreement is an important achievement reflecting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s economic vision. He described it as a sign of the government’s commitment to expanding international trade and economic growth, adding that it would strengthen trade relations between both countries, as well as create new opportunities for local businesses.

He further said it would give small and medium enterprises (SMEs) more opportunities to grow, innovate and compete internationally. He said it would support the government’s goal of building an export-oriented economy, while improving the integration of Maldivian businesses into the global trade market.

The PTA was signed in November 2025 following negotiations during President Muizzu’s first official visit to Türkiye. Both governments completed all required legal procedures and exchanged the final written notifications before the agreement entered into force.
