Maldives condemns attempted Houthi drone attack on Makkah

The Maldives has condemned an attempted drone attack launched by the Houthi militia towards the Saudi Arabian holy city of Makkah.

The drone was intercepted and destroyed by the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces before entering the restricted airspace of Makkah, according to the Maldivian government.

The government said any attempt to threaten Makkah and endanger pilgrims, worshippers, citizens and residents was unacceptable and constituted a violation of the sanctity of Islam’s holiest city.

It also described the incident as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional peace and security.

The Maldives reaffirmed its solidarity with the government and people of Saudi Arabia, and expressed support for measures taken by the Kingdom to safeguard its sovereignty and security and protect the Two Holy Mosques.
