SMEs vital to sustainable advancement of local island economies, BCC chief says

The economic progress and development of islands across the Maldives are fundamentally tied to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed, the managing director of the Business Center Corporation, said in a statement shared on social media to commemorate Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day. Such businesses, Ziyau noted, play a vital role in the sustainable advancement of local island economies.

The productivity of these small enterprises not only drives localised progress but also strengthens the broader national economy and revitalises communities, the managing director said. Observing that small businesses serve as the central backbone of the Maldivian economy, Ziyau praised their crucial ongoing efforts in generating employment opportunities, paving the way for new innovations, and establishing a foundation for sustainable economic development across the nation. He provided assurance that the Business Center Corporation will remain steadfast in its commitment to assisting, empowering, and creating additional avenues of opportunity for these micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

The Business Center Corporation and SME Digital, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, are currently conducting a nationwide initiative to mark the occasion. The government has been undertaking numerous efforts to propel the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, with the ‘Maldives Expo’ standing out as one of the most successful state-led initiatives to date. This exhibition successfully captured the attention of investors, effectively broadening the pathways for various local enterprises to secure vital investment opportunities.
