Preliminary tallies announced in MDP leadership race

Former President Mohamed Nasheed secured a decisive victory in a three-way race to become the chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, according to provisional data released following the vote on 12 June.

President Nasheed collected 21,301 votes, comfortably outpacing his closest competitor, Meekail Ahmed Nasym, the member of parliament for South Galolhu, who garnered 9,462 votes. A third candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed, finished with 132 votes. The provisional data indicated that 31,129 individuals cast their ballots in the election, representing a fraction of the broader electorate given that party-released lists indicated more than 50,000 people were eligible to participate.

The confirmation of President Nasheed’s victory preceded the official announcement of the provisional results, prompting a special celebratory event organised at the Artificial Beach on the evening of 13 June to mark the triumph.

The electoral success marks a significant turn for President Nasheed, who returned to the party after a temporary departure. He initially left the organisation amid internal turmoil sparked by his defeat in the internal 2023 presidential primary election of the MDP, before rejoining the ranks in June of last year.
