Voluntary blood donation is a profoundly important practice necessary to ensure the security of public health, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said in a social media message commemorating World Blood Donor Day on 14 June.
As the global community marks the annual observance, designed to increase international awareness and encourage regular donation, the vital participation of voluntary donors must be formally recognised, President Muizzu said, noting that countless lives are saved because of their commitment. "On #WorldBloodDonorDay, we recognise the invaluable contribution of voluntary blood donors, whose generosity helps save lives," the president wrote.
Through these actions, patients depending on continuous transfusions or sudden emergency care receive immediate treatment. Despite modern medical advancements, human blood remains an irreplaceable resource. Voluntarily donating blood is therefore essential to guaranteeing public health security, helping communities prepare for emergencies, and enabling comprehensive medical care, the president observed.
"Their selfless act ensures that those suffering from lifelong conditions or patients requiring emergency care receive the support they need when it mains an irreplaceable resource, despite the remarkable advancement in medicine and technology," the President wrote. "Therefore, voluntary blood donation is essential in safeguarding public health, effective healthcare delivery and national emergency preparedness."
For a geographically dispersed island nation like the Maldives, securing blood urgently is of paramount importance. "For a geographically dispersed island nation such as the Maldives, timely access to blood can make a critical difference during medical emergencies," President Muizzu stated, affirming that the administration will work diligently to raise public awareness, encourage voluntary donation, and strengthen a culture of solidarity to safeguard community health.
