The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has stated that the voting process to elect the President of Meedhoo Council was conducted well by the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
HRCM observed polling and vote counting at two polling stations in Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, and one in Male’ City.
In a statement, HRCM said monitoring elections is part of its legal mandate to ensure voting is free, fair, transparent, and credible. The commission said the voting process was generally peaceful, secure, and smooth, and praised the efforts of the ECM, Maldives Police Service (MPS), candidates, parties, and voters in maintaining a democratic process.
However, it noted a concern that two polling centres in Meedhoo were not easily accessible for persons with disabilities. Overall, the ECM was said to have conducted the process in an orderly and effective manner.
The election was held following a decision to conduct another round for the post of Meedhoo Council President in the 2026 Local Council Elections after votes of the top candidates were tied.
