President's state visits not solely aimed at financial gain, spokesperson says

The Chief Government Spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef stated that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visits to countries are not just for financial aid, business or ceremonial purposes.

Speaking at the “Presser with the Spox” press conference, the Chief Spokesperson assured that these diplomatic visits benefit the Maldives meaningfully in many different sectors, fulfilling the needs of the people.

For instance, he highlighted the President’s recent trip to Sri Lanka, stating that the priority here is not obtaining investments or loans.

He stated that Sri lanka is one of Maldives' closest neighbour and that the nation stands to benefit a lot from strengthening this diplomatic engagement.

As such, he noted that the seven agreements signed between the two countries are essential to the development of the Maldives.

“One such agreement is for medical students. They are required to complete an internship to be able to practice medicine. Obtaining an internship would be the biggest hurdle. While assisting with this issue, Sri lanka is the nearest country, with an affordable, high-quality education.” The Chief Spokesperson stated.

There are two main initiatives being prioritised on this visit, he added. These are the establishment of a Bank of Maldives (BML) branch and Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) exports to Sri lanka.

The Chief Spokesperson stated that the trip is for more than just ceremonial events, such as the reception with the Guard of Honour. The President is working to bring about progress for the people during his visit, via agreements and investment forums.
