MACL completes 42 percent of Milandhoo airport dredging works

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has completed 11 hectares of dredging under the Milandhoo’s Airport and Harbour Development Project.

The government aims to complete the project within the next two years. While a total of 25 hectares of land will be reclaimed under the project, dredging works and airport development works were contracted to MACL in October last year. Dredging is expected to be completed within eight months from the start of works.

Sharing the latest updates on the project’s progress, MACL said 42 percent of dredging has now been completed. Dredging is being carried out using the “Queen of the Netherlands” dredger, which has a capacity of 35,000 cubic metres of sand per load.

The project aims to ensure better land use in the medium and long term and improve infrastructure on the island. The island’s existing harbour will be relocated to another area to make space for the airport. A new harbour area will be developed alongside the project.
