Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is preparing to establish a world-class international duty-free operation at the new terminal of Gan International Airport, Addu City.
MACL said the project aims to introduce luxury retail services in the southern Maldives, improving the overall travel experience for passengers. It is expected to boost tourist arrivals to the region, as well as expand the economy and promote tourism.
According to MACL, the development forms part of the government’s efforts to expand the economy and diversify tourism. It is also expected to help open new international air routes to Gan.
MACL said the duty-free operation will create employment opportunities for youth, with training provided through internationally recognised brands. The initiative is an important part of the “Addu City Welcomes the World” vision that aims to diversify Addu City economy.
The company added that the new venture will elevate the Maldives’ travel retail sector to world-class standards.
