President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to building a compassionate, accessible and equitable mental health care system, with a focus on prevention, early intervention and quality treatment.
In a message shared on social media to mark World Mental Health Day, the President said the Government’s efforts would be guided by the voices and lived experiences of people who use mental health services and tailored to the needs of the Maldivian people.
He said the Government was advancing this commitment through the Mental Health Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, alongside policy and legislative reforms, including the formulation of a National Mental Health Policy and a comprehensive Mental Health Act.
The President also highlighted efforts to improve access to mental health care by integrating services into primary health care, strengthening regional and specialist services, and enhancing tele-mental health and crisis response systems.
President Muizzu said the Government aimed to prioritise prevention and early intervention while ensuring quality health care remained accessible to the public.
He added that building a kinder and more caring Maldives, where communities support one another and open conversations about mental health are encouraged, remained a key objective.
