Final preparations begin for the modernisation of roadways in Ukulhas

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has initiated preparatory operations for the laying of asphalt on the thoroughfares of Ukulhas in Alifu Alifu Atoll, marking a definitive milestone in the island’s infrastructure development. While the island maintains a formally registered population of 1,100 residents, an expanding local tourism sector and diversified industrial enterprises have bolstered the functional residential population to approximately 2,000.

This economic vitality has long been contrasted by a deteriorating road network that sustains disproportionately severe damage during the rainy season compared to other islands. Frequent flooding regularly inundates residential properties, while prolonged water stagnation creates immense logistical hardships, historically resulting in physical injuries to pedestrians and mechanical damage to vehicles.

To address these hazards and resolve the infrastructure bottlenecks impeding the flourishing tourism industry, the community prioritised a comprehensive modernisation of the island’s roadways, underpinned by a high-capacity subterranean water drainage system. Launched in mid-2023, the project encompasses the development of 2.68 kilometres of roadways, targeting ten frequently utilised routes including those housing essential public service institutions and the central arterial road.

Following the completion of utility networks and pedestrian pavements, engineering crews have successfully initiated the laying of the aggregate base course layer. The final operational phase of asphalt application is scheduled to begin imminently. This modernisation is entirely financed by the national state budget, representing a capital investment of more than USD 3.63 million.
