President Muizzu pledges central power station to end Addu City’s electricity crisis

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to end Addu City’s chronic electricity shortages through the construction of a centralised power station, a major infrastructure initiative he described as critical to the region’s stability and development.

Speaking at a campaign event hosted by the ruling People’s National Congress, billed as 'The Greater Addu Event', President Muizzu underscored that the city’s power instability had persisted across successive administrations, despite the passage of multiple electoral terms. He positioned the project as a cornerstone of his government’s broader agenda to fortify the national economy and advance development initiatives nationwide.

The president confirmed that the overhaul of Addu’s power grid is scheduled for completion by July 2027. He noted that the forthcoming facility is specifically engineered to secure the city’s energy needs for the next two decades. Highlighting the technical scope and timeline, he offered firm assurances on delivery: “God willing, a system providing 26 megawatts of electricity will be established under this agreement.” He added: “By the time we reach July of next year, God willing, this project will be completely finished, and Addu City’s electricity problem will be solved for the next 20 years.”

Attention then turned to the wider development agenda for the southern city. President Muizzu detailed the scale of ongoing government investments, stating: “We are advancing 48 projects.” He elaborated: “Some projects have practically begun, while the administrative work for others is ongoing. There are also 18 projects in this year’s budget.”

The president also stressed the importance of municipal infrastructure. Under the second phase of Addu City’s road development initiative, the Road Development Corporation is actively procuring equipment and personnel to advance physical works. Alongside these efforts, he highlighted the modernisation of the local healthcare sector, presenting it as part of a holistic approach to urban development in Addu City.
