President Expands Madifushi Jurisdiction

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially decreed that the islands of Ufuriyaa and Kolhufushi, will now formally operate under the administrative jurisdiction of Madifushi, located in Thaa Atoll.

This strategic decision directly fulfills a key pledge made by the President, aimed at systematically defining and designating the administrative oversight of inhabited islands across the nation.

By consolidating Ufuriyaa and Kolhufushi under Madifushi's authority, the administration seeks to enhance the efficiency of local governance, streamline resource allocation, and foster more integrated community development within the region.

This move reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that every island community benefits from clear administrative pathways and coordinated support.

This decision was formalised through amendments announced by Presidential Decree issued on Thursday. These amendments were made under the Decentralization Act which grants the President the authority to designate areas for both City and Island Councils.

The newly formed chart of Madifushi has now been codified and published in the Government Gazette.
