Statistics have shown that more than USD 1.1 million was spent last month to provide financial assistance to single mothers and fathers living in poverty.
The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) is implementing different welfare programmes to provide assistance to single parents who are in need of financial assistance.
According to NSPA, the agency assisted 3,313 parents caring for 5,687 children in July. During the month, 112 parents and 207 children newly registered for assistance. The total spent on the single-parent assistance programme in July reached USD 1.106 million.
NSPA also assisted 98 caregivers and 132 children under its support programme for children living in the guardianship of caregivers without parental assistance, spending USD 11,738 on the programme. Last month, 659 individuals also received food assistance from NSPA, amounting to USD 1,709.
Under the 2025 amendment to the Social Protection Act for single parents, assistance of USD 195 per child is available for up to four children, under which a parent with four eligible children can receive USD 780 per month, or USD 9,340 per year. The amendment was introduced to provide greater financial support to parents who are raising their children alone.
