Maldives Selected as Venue for 42nd ABA Conference, Signalling BML’s Rising Influence

The Bank of Maldives (BML) has been selected to host the 42nd General Meeting and Conference of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA), a decision that underscores the institution’s expanding influence within the region’s financial sector. The event, scheduled to take place in the Maldives next year, will mark the second time BML has hosted the conference, following its successful organisation in 2018.

The selection was formalised during the 41st ABA General Meeting and Conference, held in Bhutan from 15 to 16 September. During the same gathering, Mohamed Shareef, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BML, was appointed Vice Chairman of the ABA.

The ABA serves as a principal forum for banking institutions across Asia, fostering dialogue and collaboration among member organisations. BML noted that the upcoming conference will convene senior leadership from the banking and financial sectors, including chief executive officers, senior executives, and industry experts. Attendees are expected to engage in discussions on critical issues, assess sectoral opportunities, and deliberate on the future of the financial industry.

“We are honoured to be chosen as the host for the 42nd ABA General Meeting and Conference,” Shareef said. “This is a significant opportunity for the Maldives to showcase its thriving financial sector and its commitment to regional collaboration,” he elaborated. “We look forward to welcoming our peers from the Asian banking community and providing a platform for valuable dialogue on the future of our industry.”

BML, which offers the most extensive banking services in the Maldives, stated that being entrusted with hosting the conference for a second time reflects the bank’s growing leadership and prominence within the Asian banking community.
