President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally designated Maafaru Lagoon, located in Alifu Alifu Atoll, as part of Feridhoo Island. The reclassification, issued by presidential decree, is intended to strengthen Feridhoo’s economic foundation and deliver on a central campaign promise.
The decree was enacted under Section 134(a) of the Decentralisation Act. With its issuance, the appendix defining inhabited islands in the Maldives has been amended to reflect the lagoon’s inclusion within Feridhoo’s jurisdiction. The update has been published in the Government Gazette, according to the President’s Office.
During a visit to the atoll in August, President Muizzu first announced his intention to reassign the lagoon. In meetings with Feridhoo residents, he outlined plans to develop the area for local tourism and public recreation. Government officials say the move aligns with the administration’s broader strategy to promote decentralised development and generate sustainable income for island communities.
The president also presented a slate of infrastructure projects tailored to Feridhoo’s long-term needs. Among them are the construction of a police station, expansion of school facilities, a new health centre, a boatyard, and a designated picnic area. Implementation contracts for several of these initiatives have already been awarded.
Additional commitments include resolving access issues at the harbour entrance, building new sports facilities, and overseeing the development of a mosque designed to accommodate 500 people.
