Parliament approves second extension of current session

The Parliament has voted to prolong the ongoing second session for a second time, setting the new adjournment date for 27 August.

Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla said the move was necessary to finish pending legislative business and to allow committees to complete their extensive workloads.

Under the Parliament’s regular calendar, the second session runs from 1 June to 15 August. This year’s session was originally slated to conclude last Saturday, but a first extension—approved last week—pushed the close to 20 August.

A second motion, tabled by the Speaker, secured 58 votes in favour, granting an additional week that now ends on 27 August.

Parliamentary rules of procedure permit term extensions when important work remains unfinished, provided a majority of members approve. Speaker Abdul Raheem emphasised that the extensions are procedural, not political, and are aimed at ensuring that bills, reports and committee work slated for this session are finalised before the Parliament goes into recess until 1 October.
