The Maldives’ largest marine research centre has officially opened at Jawakara Island Maldives.
The facility was inaugurated by the Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim and Chairman of Champa Brothers Maldives Pvt Ltd, Mohamed Moosa. The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Chief of Defence Force Ibrahim Hilmy, as well as resort and research centre officials.
The Marine Research Centre has been established to study and monitor key aspects of the Maldives’ fragile environment. The centre will conduct research on climate change, marine biodiversity and coral reef health.
Champa Brothers Chairman Mohamed Moosa highlighted the importance of such an initiative as the tourism industry continues to expand. He also stressed that sustainable management of marine ecosystems is vital to protecting the country’s natural environment.
The marine research centre is equipped with research laboratories, quarantine facilities and classrooms. The centre can be used to conduct studies and research by both local universities and international institutes. Research students will have the opportunity to receive hands-on training.
A workshop has been launched with the participation of international professors and scientists to coincide with the inauguration of the new marine research centre.
