Maldives-China Ties Continue to Unlock New Pathways, Minister Saeed Says

Maldives and China have created new pathways for mutual growth, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed said, hailing the strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

In a post on social media platforms in connection with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the former’s ongoing visit to China, Minister Saeed said the relationship between the two countries has stood the test of time while it continues to strengthen.

“President Xi and President Muizzu’s recent meeting reinforced our shared commitment to sustainable development,creating new pathways for mutual growth,amid today’s uncertain global economic environment,” he said.

Discussions during the meeting between President Xi and President Dr Muizzu on Sunday, focused on key areas of cooperation, including economic development, trade and investment, security collaboration, and fostering people-to-people connections, the President’s office had said.

President Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing full support to the Maldives in achieving its national development goals and emphasised the importance of continuing the result-oriented partnership.

Both leaders agreed to further elevate China-Maldives relations under the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership (2024–2028), it added.

President Dr Muizzu is currently undertaking an official visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. This is his second visit to China since assuming office in November 2023, underscoring the growing partnership and deepening ties between the Maldives and China.
